Magero smiles to victory as Nyanza Club honours Onditi in April Mug

It was an emotional weekend for Nyanza Golf Club members when Lunar Magero beat a field of over 50 to emerge the overall winner in April Mug of the Month played over the weekend in Kisumu.

Magero alongside Albert Ojonyo, Nicholas Darius Odhiambo, Joyce Osike, Daniel Nyerere, Kevin Omamo, Brian Simbi, Peter Yongo, Elijah Adul, George Okoth, and Victor Oluoch paid their tribute to one of their own Pamela Onditi who passed away two months ago,

The tournament celebrates golfers born in April, among them was Onditi who after planning for the tournament passing away before she could achieve her dream of making the day a success.

Indeed, Onditi who was a loved golfer among the Lady section smiled in heaven when Magero dedicated the win to her and showed that women can also beat men in golf after emerging top with 68 points.

Speaking after the win, Magero said she did not give up in the unpredictable course and thanked her flight mates Joyce Osike, BS Patel and junior Tony Nyambogo for pushing her when she almost gave up.

"It was a tough fair way especially with the dry and wet greens considering the unpredictable weather patterns today in Kisumu. However, we pushed each other when we were at the brink of giving up in our four ball and am glad I soldiered on.

"It's a special win for me as we remember Pamela Onditi, one of us and my birthday mate. May God rest his soul in eternal peace," said Magero.

Nishal Shah emerged the gross winner with 85 points as Nyanza Golf Club captain Griffin Owino took the Divison One winner accolades home after posting 74 points. Tom Agumbi and Rosemary Obara were second and third behind the captain.

Lady Captain Lina Akello followed in Owino's footsteps by emerging top in Divison Two followed by former chairman Ojwang Luci and Nyanza Clun junior convener Lilian Kong'ani.

Hellen Muma continued the ladies dominance by winning Division Three followed by the ever lively Jackson Ulira.

Albert Ojonyo was the April Baby winner with 68 points followed by Daniel Nyerere with 73 points. Don Riaroh went home with Best Senior award while Emmanuel 'Manu' Brian was the Best Junior.

Nyanza Golf Club captain Owino praised the members for the huge turn up while urging more corporate support after National Oil Corporation of Kenya, Old Mutual, Safarilink, Jubilee Insurance, PACIS Insurance, AAR Healthcare, and friends supported the event.

"Partnership gives birth to success and April's Mug was a success. Thanks to all the sponsors and we are looking forward to many more ahead of next month Mug," said Owino.

Ojwang Lusi and Linah Okello rounded off the podium with the Longest Drive man and woman awards respectively as Tabitha Ojwang took home best effort.
