Mombasa bask in the glory of winning Tannahill Shield tourney

Celebrations gripped the Coastal town of Mombasa after its senior golf team emerged winners in this year's 100th edition of the annual Tannahill Shield Easter Golf tournament that ended at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf course in Nairobi County on Tuesday.

In round one on Monday, the team comprising pairs Simon Maina/Gurbux Singh, James Mureru/Martin Ombura, Peter Kimanga/Mburu Kariuki, and Simon Karemu/John Orioro carded a combined total of 239 gross and in round two on Tuesday Simon Karemu was replaced by Yobesh Oyaro as the team recorded a total of 238 gross for a combined handsome round of 477 gross to claim the lead.

Western Kenya team were the runners up 480 gross beating the host Royal to the third slot by single stroke difference.

In the Junior category hosts Royal Nairobi Junior team comprising pairs of Shawn Malesi/Mwathi Gicheru,Kimani Gicheru/Kagame Handa, Andrew Gathere/Steve Kinisu, Shuhan Peng/Bradley Malitt, Kagame Handa/Kimani Gicheru and Fanuel Yebeltal/Yingyi Summer recorded a total of 470 gross to scoop the top spot.

Karen Country Club Junior team with 484 gross and Sigona Golf Club Junior team with 492 gross were the runners-up and second runners-up.

The main team competition of the prestigious tournament is set to tee off tomorrow.

Club Captain Willy Mastamet said they will be celebrating a century of elite amateur golf and rich sporting tradition in this year's tournament, featuring nine competing teams.

Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Mombasa Golf Club, Muthaiga Golf Club, Western Kenya, Limuru Country Club, Vet Lab Sports Club, Kenya Railways Golf Club, Sigona Golf Club, and Windsor Golf & Country Club will be lining up in the event

"The competition will maintain its renowned format of three-way foursomes' match play, ensuring intense and thrilling encounters throughout the weekend," said Mastamet.

He said this year's Tannahill Shield will not just be a golf tournament but a celebration of history, tradition, and sportsmanship.

"As we embark on the next century of this iconic event we anticipate growth, continued excellence, and unforgettable moments on the course as we are set to witness fierce competition among Kenya's top golf clubs, with each team demonstrating remarkable skill and resilience across four intense rounds," Mastamet said.

Team Mombasa manager Eric Nyongesa said that Mombasa Club has this year, with the generous sponsorship by NCBA, been able to present formidable teams in the Centenary Tannahill Golf Tournament in the Junior, Senior and Main categories.

This year the club has fielded the most experienced and talented golfers in all categories under the overall stewardship of a Team Manager and a veteran golfer.
