Golf: Obonyo emerges top at Mombasa Club as Mughal shines in Nakuru

Home Golfer Japheth Obonyo braved strong winds from the nearby Indian Ocean waters and tricky pin positions to emerge the Division One winner in the ongoing 2022 NCBA Golf Series that teed off at the par-71 Mombasa Golf Club on Saturday with 110 golfers participating.
Playing off handicap 16 Obonyo returned a score of 38 stableford points to claim the title and register his maiden victory this year.
"This year has not been easy for me in the course, but today I was prepared and had to send my drives against the strong winds to keep my ball in the fairways. The pin positions were even quite tricky but I managed it and eventually took the lead. It has been a good day with a lot of fun alongside my teammates and I also thank the sponsors and the Club for this successful day," said Obonyo.
Club mate handicap 12 Aloise Ogola missed the lead by a single point to emerge the runners up on a count back score of 37 points.
Leisure Golf Club's handicap 20 Carol Mokaya was the Lady winner on 33 points while handicap 25 Fidel Wasike went home with the junior prize after carding 37 points.
The Division two Men winner on 30 points was handicap 36 Rishi Dodhia on 46 points and handicap 23 Sheel Dodhia brought 40 points to claim the runners up slot.
In Nakuru, home player Athan Mughal shot a round total of 39 stableford points to claim Captain's Club Golf tour.
Mughal combined 20 stableford points from his outward nine with 19 stableford points from his inward nine to triumph in the Co-Operative Bank and CIC Group sponsored tournament.
In his pursuit was Douglas Kanuri who lost to Mughal on countback to clinch Division 1 category prize on a similar score of 39(20+19) stableford points as Kamonjo Kaburi finished second with 37 stableford points.
Leading the ladies was Judy Tek on 33 stableford points ahead of Beatrice Bisonga from Kakamega Sport Club who was second with 25 stableford points.
In Nanyuki, Anthony Rukwaro won July Monthly Mug top prize with 68 nett denying Stephen Wambugu a podium finish by two strokes at 70 nett. Cyprian Bundi was Men winner third with 71 nett with Marion Githinji claiming Lady Winner prize on a score of 72 nett.
At Kenya Railway Golf Club, Laban Gathungu reigned supreme in the Eastern Flour Mills Golf Day after returning a commanding 42 stableford points to bag the overall winner prize. On a score of 41 stableford points, Stephen Okundi was second as Joseph Kagicha came in third with 41 stableford points.
At the Thika Green Golf Resort course on the same day, handicap 33 Stella Njoroge carded 66 nett to emerge the overall winner of the 2022 Rotary Club of Kirinyaga Charity Golf tournament that attracted 100 golfers.
