Jose Mourinho will take charge of Italian football side AS Roma from next season, following the announcement Paulo Fonseca will leave his role as head coach at the end of the season.

Mourinho will sign a three-year contract with the Giallorossi that runs until the summer of 2024.

Roma described Mourinho as a ‘great champion’ and hoped the ‘Special One’ would lead them to success in the near future.

“A great champion who has won trophies at every level, José will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project. The appointment of José is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club,” said the club on their website.

Mourinho has won 25 major trophies in his illustrious coaching career but failed to produce his magic at Tottenham Hotspur, who resorted to sacking him before an English League Cup final.

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years. The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season,” said Mourinho.

Mourinho is among only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League with two different clubs, an achievement he repeated in the Europa League.

He has won the Premier League three times with Chelsea (2005, 2006 and 2015), and lifted league titles in Italy, Spain and Portugal with Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto respectively.
