Mathare United climbed out of the relegation zone after defeating Kariobangi Sharks 3-2 in a five-goal thriller FKF Premier League match played at Thika Stadium on Wednesday.

Daniel Otieno scored a last gasp winner as Mathare United came from behind twice to defeat Sharks.

Jumaan Khalid cancelled out Robert Onyango’s opener for a 1-1 tie at the break before John Mwangi once again restored parity for Mathare after matching Peter Lwasa’s goal in the final half for a 2-2 draw with 20 minutes remaining to play.

Just as Sharks were sure of a point, Otieno answered Mathare United’s prayers by scoring in the extra time to give the 2008 champions a lifeline in their race to surviving relegation.

The victory propelled Mathare out of the relegation zone for the first time this season as they leapfrogged both Vihiga United and Western Stima.

The Slum Boys are now 15th in the standings with 21 points same as Western Stima but with a greater goal difference.

Sharks dropped to fifth after the loss, their third consecutive defeat since defeating defending champions Gor Mahia 2-1 last month.
