English Premier League Side Everton came, saw and did not conquer.

Kariobangi Sharks humbled them 4-3 on post-match penalties in an exhilarating encounter at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi on Sunday, July 7.

Sharks have now inked their place in history books as the first Kenyan-based team to win against an English Premier League side on home soil.

Sharks opened the scoring through Duke Abuya who made a brilliant run down the right wing to slot home the opener on the 27th-minute – sending the fans in a frenzy.

The KPL side dominated the first half with their solid defence keeping star man Theo Walcott fenced out of goal.

In midfield, Sharks’ composure and control of the game saw Spaniard Andre Gomes receive a yellow card for an untidy play.

Sharks went into the break leading 1-0 and left the stands begging for more of the first half display.

Fighting back

Things, however, didn’t go as expected for Sharks after Everton came back stronger and steadily turned the tide.

After a brilliant display, the Toffees got a free kick at the edge of the penalty area and Joe Williams converted it with ease.

His whip cruised below the Sharks’ wall, beating the goalkeeper to the far post.

Both teams held their solitary goal and pushed the game to post-match penalties.

Goal scorers Williams and Abuya both missed the target in the first round of the shootout before both sides scored three consecutive kicks.
