Moi County Referral Hospital has appealed to families who lost loved ones in Thursday's road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway to come forward and help in identifying bodies.

Medical Superintendent Jeremiah Shem confirmed that nine bodies had not been identified. Only five bodies had been identified by Sunday.

Dr Shem said one injured person had been discharged from hospital while two others were still receiving treatment.

The hospital sent out the appeal because its mortuary is overstretched.

"Unidentified bodies are still lying on the ground at the mortuary," a source at the hospital told The Standard.

According to the source, the mortuary can only accommodate 16 bodies.

On Friday, Dr Shem said the death toll from the accident that occurred at Ndii had risen to 14 after two passengers died on Thursday night at the facility.

The accident occurred when a matatu belonging to Genesis Company collided with a trailer.

Twelve passengers died on the spot while two others succumbed while undergoing treatment.
