Flooding that hit Libya following heavy rains on Sunday and Monday has claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people and displaced more than 10,000 damaging buildings and infrastructure.

Storm Daniel flood hit the country's eastern part which caused two dams on the Wadi Derna River to burst, sending millions of cubic metres downstream.

Derna has more than 125,000 inhabitants.

Derna's deputy mayor, Ahmed Madroud, told Al Jazeera that the region city has witnessed damages of close to 20 per cent.

"When the river overflowed its banks, it just took all the buildings with it, and the families that were in it," he said.

France and Turkiye have already pledged to come to the aid of the country, with the United Nations calling for aid to be sent to the country.

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi declared a three-day mourning to show solidarity with Morocco and Libya after the two countries were hit by an earthquake and flooding.
