GSU beat Kiambu County in tug-of-war contest

The reigning national tug-of-war champions General Service Unit (GSU) team registered another victory against Kiambu County in Mombasa over the weekend to emerge this year’s Mashujaa Day kings.

GSU shattered hopes of Kiambu to dethrone them at Mombasa’s Tononoka grounds.

During the duel, the Kiambu County team looked like they had enough strength and were going to teach the GSU team a lesson. Kiambu, on realising GSU had stamina, shook the rope and managed to gain ground, sending the GSU team into panic.

As GSU panicked, Kiambu gained ground and pulled them towards the finish line but things never worked for their side after GSU employed new tactics.

But as each side stood its ground, the GSU tactically shook the rope and pulled Kiambu team towards the finish line. The first round finally ended when the GSU overpowered the opponents to win the contest before winning the second second battle.

Before travelling to Mombasa, GSU defeated Nakuru County 2-0. The team also defeated Post Bank 2-0. GSU now have 24 points from eight matches. Nairobi County have 18 points from a similar number of  games.

Speaking after the game, GSU team captain Peter Keter said they were now waiting for Kenya Defence Forced (KDF) during the national championships in Nakuru from November 15 to 18.

“Although we were worried about the Kiambu team, which has of late posed a big challenge to us, we knew they would not dispossess us of the title we have held for the last five years,” Keter told FeverPitch.

Keter said that for the last four years, GSU have been having a strong team because the KDF tug-of-war team, which used be their main threat, can no longer match them.

“The KDF team does not have the stamina to face us and that is why we are confident if they surface during the national championships in November, we will still defeat them,” said Keter.

During the league, Kiambu County Women tug-of-war team were declared this year’s Mashujaa Day champions after they had a walkover after Nairobi Women County team failed to turn up.

Later, a combined team of Kiambu women and men beat GSU in a friendly encounter after a big struggle.
