It is commonly known as papai in Swahili and papaw, pawpaw or papaya in English.

Papaya is a rare fruit which is green and turgid when unripe but as it ripens, its pill changes to an orange colour and becomes as soft as a ripe avocado.

A raw pawpaw contains 88 per cent water, 11 per cent carbohydrates, Vitamin C, negligible fats and proteins.

A piece of pawpaw has three times the amount of Vitamin C contained in a similar piece of apple. Vitamin C speeds up the healing of wounds as it aids in the formation of scar tissue and for this reason, pawpaw is used to dress up open wounds.
