Bungoma County launches Sh55m education project in Mt Elgon

The M-Pesa Foundation, in partnership with Bungoma County, has launched a Sh55 million project to bridge educational gaps at Toroso Primary School in Mt Elgon Constituency.

The project under the M-Pesa Foundation’s Citizens of the Future programme at the school in Chesikaki Ward will also enhance digital literacy.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka said the initiative also aims to provide modern, inclusive, and digitally equipped learning facilities to support quality education in underserved rural areas.

“This project will completely change the educational landscape of Toroso Primary and the wider community. M-Pesa Foundation is playing a pivotal role in improving school infrastructure, and we remain committed to such partnerships for the benefit of our people,” said Governor Lusaka.

The development includes the construction of Early Childhood Development (ECDE) classrooms, Grade One to Grade Six classrooms, two Junior Secondary School streams, a fully equipped ICT laboratory with 40 computers, a science laboratory, and a new administration block.

The project also includes the building of ablution facilities for both pupils and teachers, as well as the planting of 1,000 tree seedlings to support environmental sustainability.

M-Pesa Foundation Chairperson Joe Ogutu emphasised the foundation’s dedication to supporting equitable access to education.

“This is part of our wider goal to ensure that every child, regardless of location, has access to quality education infrastructure and the tools needed for digital learning,” Ogutu said.

Governor Lusaka also acknowledged the role of National Assembly Speaker Dr Moses Wetang’ula in facilitating strategic partnerships that bring tangible benefits to Bungoma residents.

“Speaker Wetang’ula has shown unwavering dedication to development in our county. His support in making such initiatives possible is deeply appreciated,” Lusaka noted.

The project offers renewed hope to hundreds of learners and educators in Mt. Elgon, a region that has historically faced significant educational infrastructure challenges.

It reflects a growing synergy between private sector partners and county governments aimed at improving rural education and empowering the next generation through technology and innovation.
