Azimio coalition appoints trio to join panel to audit 2022 elections

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has nominated a team to the yet-to-be-formed panel that will audit the 2022 elections.

National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi has submitted three names to Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula in his capacity as chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission pursuant to the recommendation made by the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco).

The three are former Busia Senator and former Attorney General Amos Wako, former nominated Senator Judith Pareno, and forensic investigation expert Julius Njiraini.

They will join a team of three others to be appointed by the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

Azimio has asked the Speaker to facilitate the inauguration of the panel for the speedy execution of its mandate as recommended in the Nadco report.

"The Nadco Committee recommended that within 21 days of the adoption of the report by Parliament, the leadership of the majority and minority coalitions shall appoint a panel of experts to evaluate the 2022 electoral process," said Wandayi.

The panel will appoint a consortium of firms to undertake the evaluation and present a harmonized report to the Parliament.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared President William Ruto as the winner after getting 50.49 per cent of the votes while Azimio coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga got 48.85 per cent. Raila rejected the results and filed a petition at the Supreme Court which upheld the results.

During the Nadco talks, the evaluation of the 2022 election results was one of the demands put on the table by Azimio coalition, which said it wanted to ascertain the truth about the last General Election and that it was willing to accept the truth and move on.
