National Construction Authority accredits over 400 construction workers

The National Construction Authority, in collaboration with the office of Migori Woman Representative Fatuma Mohammed, has trained and accredited over 400 construction workers in Migori.

The move aims to help maintain construction standards, enhance safety, and promote sustainable building practices.

According to Mohammed, many construction workers who lacked skills and certificates were finding it hard to get jobs at construction sites, especially in government projects.

She stressed the need for construction workers to get the required skills and certificates that would enable them to get jobs easily.

"After getting the experience, construction workers need to have the right documentation to show that they are fully qualified for the work," Ms. Mohammed stated.

She asked more youths to take advantage of the opportunity, saying that the affordable housing project by the government would be advantageous to those who have been accredited.

Mohammed also encouraged female construction workers to be part of the training that would open more opportunities for them.

"Our women are not left behind in this. A number of them have joined this training, and more need to come. This training is meant to benefit everyone," the Woman Representative highlighted.

The training, which has been scheduled to run for four days and targets over 2,000 construction workers, has seen young people being put at the forefront.

"We have prioritised our young people who have skills," she said.

Mohammed was speaking at Awendo Recreational Park in Awendo Sub-County, Migori County, on June 3, 2025, where she launched the training of construction workers who were drawn from Awendo, Rongo, and Uriri Sub-Counties.

Ken Ounda, an official from the National Construction Authority and working in the Department of Training and Capacity Building, said they managed to accredit 410 construction workers from the three Sub-Counties.

"This is a program that we had planned to conduct," Mr. Ounda stated.

For accreditation, construction workers need to provide a technical certificate and experience.

Without the Technical certificate, one is required to have a recommendation letter from an engineer whom they have worked for.

"We check the experience and technical skills," Ounda stated.

The team trained construction workers from Suna West and Suna East Sub-Counties on Wednesday and will be conducting similar activities in Kuria West and Kuria East on Thursday.

Additionally, the training would be conducted in Nyatike Sub-County on Friday.
