Family loses two children in a sand quarry

A family in Homa Bay County is in grief after two of their kin drowned in a quarry at Owiro village in Ramba location within Rachuonyo East Sub-County on Friday evening.

The minors identified as Alphayo Onyango, 9, and Emmanuel Omondi,8, were reportedly playing near the quarry.

Onyango and his cousin Omondi who was a P school had reportedly left home to go and bathe in the quarry when the incident occurred.

Ramba Location Chief Joseph Ndege said families of the children failed to find the children after they took too long to return home in the evening.

The families began looking for the children before they discovered their bodies in the quarry after several hours.

"The children's fathers are brothers. The minors reportedly left home that they were going to bathe in stagnant water in the village, not far from their home. But they failed to return home, forcing their families to look for them. They were later found dead in the quarry," Ndege said.

Ndege said the quarry was full of stagnant water due to the ongoing heavy rains in the area.

The families raised an alarm before residents of the area went and helped them to remove the bodies from the quarry.

The bodies were moved to Jawabu Funeral Home Mortuary for postmortem.

The administrator urged families to monitor the movement of their young children.

"Let parents monitor their young children and avoid leaving them alone at home," Ndege said.
