One police officer killed, six others injured after landmine explosion in Mandera

One police officer was killed and six others injured on Wednesday, June 7, after a vehicle they were travelling in hit a landmine in Qurqura village within Mandera South.

According to the reports filed at Elwak police station, the officers were in an armoured 110 Land Rover on their way to Elwak for refuelling before they hit an IED on the left side of the road.

Hospital records who that one of the officers succumbed to serious injuries on the right hand and deep cuts on the head. The other six are been treated for chest, ribs, neck and head injuries at Elwak Sub County Referral Hospital

The officers were attached to Alungu Police Station in Lafey Sub County.

The scene was visited by sub-county police commanders for Mandera South and Lafey who did safety checks and cleared the area.

There have been increased insecurity incidences in Mandera in the past weeks.

On May 27, a bodaboda rider was killed and his motorbike taken by unidentified men armed with crude weapons.

On June 1, a Land Cruiser plying Banisa-Mandera route was ambushed by unknown gunmen at Sarman village. Two passengers were injured.

On June 2, one officer was killed and two others were seriously injured after they were ambushed along Takaba-Elele road in Mandera South.

The police reports indicate the officers' vehicle was fired with RPGS before the casualties were evacuated to Wajir via aircraft and later transferred to Nairobi for further treatment.
