KRA extends deadline to file tax returns amid portal downtime

The Kenya Revenue Authority has offered an additional twenty-four for Kenyans to file their annual tax returns after many faced challenges following a system downtime.

The exercise which was initially scheduled to end at midnight on Monday, June 30, will close on at midnight on Tuesday, July 1.

Additionally, KRA has extended its office hours in anticipation of a high turnout tomorrow due to a last minute rush as taxpayers evade penalties for non-payment.

“Tumefungua service lane! 24-hour extension up to tomorrow, July 1, 2025, midnight to file and pay your returns!,” said KRA in a social media announcement this evening.

“We have extended our working hours tomorrow to serve you better,” the authority further said.

Tax Service Offices are expected to open for twelve hours, between 8 am and 8 pm.

Despite the extension, people trying to beat the new deadline have reported difficulty in accessing the iTax portal which experienced lengthy downtimes for the better part of Monday.

“We need a working system not an extension,” wrote Mugi Chege in response to KRA’s announcement while Mark Enock said, “Is there a need of extending time with the system still? We need the system issue sorted.”

Some of the affected individuals have urged KRA not to impose the usual Sh2,000 fine should the downtime block them from complying.
