Police Commission urges protesters, officers to uphold dignity amid protests

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has called on demonstrators to conduct themselves with dignity, avoid violence, and respect the rights and freedoms of fellow citizens during ongoing protests.

In a statement, the Commission's Chief Executive Officer, Peter Leley, urged Kenyans to exercise humanity in their interactions with law enforcers, while also reminding police officers to act with professionalism.

"We urge all Kenyans to see beyond the uniforms and recognise the shared humanity and national duty that binds us together," said Leley.

"Conduct demonstrations in a manner that upholds dignity, avoids violence, and respects the lives, property and freedoms of fellow citizens. Let your voices be heard through constructive and non-destructive means."

The Commission also emphasised the importance of law enforcement officers maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, even in the face of provocation.

"Even in the face of provocation, uphold the rule of law and the dignity of your office," read the statement, underscoring the need for restraint and fidelity to the Constitution.

The public and the business community have also been advised to exercise caution and avoid areas where protests are taking place.

In addition, the NPS has called for empathy and cooperation between citizens and law enforcers.

"Peaceful engagement and mutual respect are the bedrock of national cohesion and democratic maturity. Let us not allow isolated moments to divide us, but rather find strength in our shared values as Kenyans."
