MCAs vow to vet Kananu despite opposition

The Nairobi County Assembly has insisted that vetting of Anne Kananu Mwenda for the position of deputy governor will proceed this Friday.
This is despite the Assembly coming under fire from legislators allied to Deputy President William Ruto and a petition by activist Okiya Omtatah seeking to block Kananu's vetting and appointment as the deputy governor of Nairobi.
If approved by the Assembly, Kananu will proceed to become the third Governor of Nairobi County and set off a chain of events that will forestall a by-election originally slated for February 18, 2021.
Deputy Speaker Geoffrey Majiwa said yesterday the Assembly had begun the process of vetting Kananu, which will culminate in her grilling this Friday.

“We have commenced Kananu’s vetting process and we will be going on with the exercise as is required of us," said Majiwa.
The deputy speaker also took a swipe at the deputy president and his allies, accusing them of falsehoods and casting the city assembly in bad light with regards to Kananu's nomination and vetting.
The decision on whether Nairobi will go to the ballot to elect a governor will, however, be determined by the courts after it rules on former governor Mike Sonko's petition.
