Men, elderly lead in vaccine uptake, ministry says

Men have embraced Covid-19 vaccines at 55 per cent than women at just 45 per cent, the Ministry of Health has disclosed. This, even as the ministry reports the proportion of adults fully vaccinated out of the 50 million population was at 2.2 per cent as of Monday, July 19.

According to the ministry’s Covid-19 statement on Tuesday, July 20, more than half of the people who have received their first Covid-19 vaccine are fully vaccinated.

“As of yesterday, 1,635,441 vaccines had been administered countrywide. Of these, total first doses were 1,040,317 while second doses are 595,124,” Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said in the statement.

The statement was quick to note “majority of vaccinated Kenyans were the elderly (185,693), some 107, 550 health workers, 84,147 teachers, 47,218 security and 170,516 others.

This comes at a time when the country recorded 618 more Covid-19 patients from 5,507 samples tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 193,807.

Some 290 patients recovered, 261 from health facilities and 29 are from home-based isolation. Total recoveries now stand at 183,211. “From the cumulative recoveries, some 146,313 Covid-19 patients were from home-based care, while 36,898 were from various health facilities,” the CS explained.

17 deaths were recorded, pushing fatalities to 3,800. Nairobi still records majority of cases with 272 new infections in the last 24 hours, Mombasa 52, Kiambu 41, Nakuru 30, Uasin Gishu 24, Migori 23, with the remaining counties having less than 20 cases each.?
