Cabinet to retable Anti-Graft Nominees in Parliament
By David Ohito
The grand coalition Government stung by claims that it was wishing away war on corruption, resolved at a Cabinet meeting to table afresh names of nominees to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for Parliament to endorse.
Strangely, the very names that faced stiff resistance in Parliament just months ago and described by some MPs as ‘lacking passion to fight graft’ will be returned intact with hope that.
State House memo issued after a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Kibaki agreed to government will table before parliament a motion seeking approval of the confirmation of Mumo Matemu, Jane Onsongo and Irene Keino as commissioners of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Said the statement: “Cabinet notes with deep concern the state of the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission and in particular the fact that many of the contracts of staff have expired or are about to expire.”
The body has been in limbo since the unceremonious exit of PLO Lumumba as director.
Obersvers watch to see if the names will garner enough support from MPs to be endorsed after a heated exchanges greeted the tabling of names.
