Leaders in Kwale County, which has had a troubled sugar industry, have demanded answers from the national government on the controversial sugar pact. Kwale's sugar plant at Ramisi collapsed many years ago but a new plant: Kwale International Sugar Company Limited; has begun crashing cane after harvesting its first crop.
Leaders now want the deal signed between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Uganda's Yoweri Museveni revealed or withdrawn altogether. They said they were standing in solidarity with Western and Nyanza leaders who have questioned the wisdom and motive behind the pact.
Led by Kwale Senator Boy Juma and some members of county assembly, the leaders argued that the pact will hurt the sugar sector through uncontrolled cheap imports and should be withdrawn.
