The Gabon Forest is part of the Congo Basin, one of the world’s most important and largest ecosystems. The book also gives solutions on how the rich natural resources in Gabon forest can be utilised responsibly by indigenous communities such as non-timber activities such as rubber tapping, medicinal plants, sustainable hunting. Conserving the forest by using forest ecosystems becomes vital as a sequester of carbon dioxide.
The Gabon Forest is a home to millions of communities in Congo Basin region. The vast Gabon forest covers 267,667 square kilometers. Since the world has availed carbon markets, communities in Gabon signed an agreement with the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) for payments on various aspects of protecting the forest. Hence, communities’ participation in activities reducing emission of carbon dionxide can receive incentives to engage in such practices.
