Amos Cheruiyot beat a field of over 50 golfers to win the golf tournament held at Nyanza Golf Club over the weekend.

The Nandi Bears Golf Club star playing alongside Nyanza Golf Club chairman Tom Odongo, First Assurance MD Stephen Lokonyo and Peter Nuthu showed his class and understanding of the Kisumu fairways to emerge the overall winner.

Cheruiyot finished with 41 points, thanking his flight mates Odongo, Nuthu and Lokonyo for the competitiveness they showed amongst themselves.

"The chairman teamed up with the Managing Director while I was with Nuthu. Before we teed off, we were already battling to win amongst ourselves and I believe that helped me play better.

"The course was difficult considering the rainy season and to emerge top under such difficult circumstances is a plus to me," said Cheruiyot.

The men's winner saw the battle of Nyanza Golf Club's Albert Ojonyo and Tito Omore, with Ojonyo beating Omore on counter back to win the category after both posted 39 points.

Nyanza's Lady Captain Lina Akello emerged the lady winner with 38 points while Rosemary Obara was runners up with 36 points.

Nuthu was the staff winner with 31 points as Safaricom's Alice Awiti went home with the special 'Piga Mingi' accolade.

Kakamega Golf Club's Cedric Konzolo took home the longest drive men award as Obara went away with the longest drive women award.

Jack Okuku emerged the best with the nearest to pin men category. In the junior's category, Tony Nyambogo emerged best with 39 points followed by Clement Ramah with 37 points.

Nyanza Golf Club Lady Captain Dr. Lina Akello's message to everyone after the event was simple, let's join hands and promote golf in the region.

"Having First Assurance sponsoring an event in the club this weekend is very important for me as the Lady Captain. It's a great chance to celebrate Mother's Day in a special way and showcase Kisumu's golfing pedigree," she said.

"I call upon many more corporate, partners and friends to bring the tournaments to Nyanza because I believe we must grow golf."

Nyanza Golf Club captain Griffin Owino added that they are welcoming parents to enroll juniors to the club with the availability of two professional golfers and US Kids certified golf trainer, three experienced golfers that can train the youth very well.
