As the Kenya Polo Association (KPA) season gets closer, talented Alice Owambo is headed to South Africa for training in readiness for the new campaign.

Owambo will be training at Swartburg Polo Club, in Kwazulu-Natal for a number of weeks where she expects to play several matches in May before the new season hits-off later the same month.

That's the same place Owambo horned her skills before getting to a serious career in polo.

"Yes, that's where I started my training actually where there's absolute Polo School run by the long term polo family and being managed by three goaler Brett Watson," said Owambo

Brett's brother Lance Watson who is a six goaler playing for Jaipur Polo Club is part of the same family. This is according to Owambo who plays for Nairobi Polo Club.

"I train there twice a year, which off course has elevated my game faster through the rigorous training there. They also created an avenue for me to play my first polo tournament in South Africa last year at Swartburg in KZN at Division D where we won second place out of six teams," she added.

Her last assignments were in January at Nairobi Polo Club where she featured in four consecutive events that ended up with the Chairman's Cup in February.

Yesterday, Owambo said she was ready to give her best in the new season with an aim to improve on her handicap.

"Getting better in any game so should be the ultimate objective of any player and I'm not an exception," she said.

"Physical training sessions for full fitness is in my roaster having just finished a clinic at Absolute Polo Club in South Africa recently."

Again she plans to improve on her stick works besides trying to bring in new horses to her stable.

"Getting new ponies is another objective in my agenda as I'll be scanning around for them," she said.

Owambo is among the latest crop of female polo players who joined the game and seem to be doing well in her matches.
