Lakers Hockey Club will be hoping to put behind their disappointing home defeat to Strathmore University’s Scorpions ahead of this weekend’s Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Premier League matches in Nairobi.

Kenyan international Rhoda Kuira scored the winning goal as leaders Strathmore saw off Lakers 1-0 in Kisumu but the lakeside outfit is keen on getting their first win of the season today when they take on newbies DFG Wolverines from 2pm at City Park.

Speaking to the Standard Sports, Lakers head coach Austin Tuju said they were unlucky during their opening match of the season.

“The league is still in the early stages and we have a host of games to play which gives us room for improvement starting with Wolverines match. We know it’s going to be tough but we are ready after some good training sessions we have had since our last match,” said Tuju.

Tomorrow, Lakers will face off against Amira Sailors at 9am to wrap up the only two fixtures of the women’s topflight league.

In the men’s Premier League, leaders Butali Warriors will travel to Kakamega to play Western Jaguars with an aim of extending their lead at the top.

Warriors are seeking to defend their title after garnering 10 points from their first four matches of the campaign as Strathmore University follow in second also with 10 points but edged out on goal difference.

“It is going to be a tough match especially after our two defeats. The team has not been clicking but we will be ready. We have sorted out the few mistakes we had in our past games and now I believe the boys can improve against Warriors,” said Jaguars coach Malungu.

Mombasa Sports Club will host Greensharks in Mombasa while Parkroad Badgers battle with Sailors at City Park.

Meanwhile, after a three week break, the National League is back with four games on the card.

Kisii Falcons will host Bay Club in the early kick-off match in Kisii while in Nairobi, Thika Rovers take on Nairobi Chapel at the Strathmore University Grounds at 1pm.

In Mombasa, Impala will face Daikyo and Mombasa West who will be playing their first game this season.
