Depression, a complex and multifaceted mental health condition often conceals itself behind a veil of subtle signs that go unnoticed. It is imperative to recognise that depression extends beyond the stereotypical image of someone solely experiencing persistent sadness.

By definition, depression is a mood disorder characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and a lack of interest in once-pleasurable activities.

While these emotions form the bedrock of depression, the more subtle signs often slip through the cracks eluding both the individual experiencing them and those around them.

One of those hidden signs is changes in sleep patterns. Depression can manifest as insomnia or excessive sleeping that disrupts the natural rhythm of a person's rest.

Unexplained physical ailments such as headaches or digestive issues may also be insidious indicators. These bodily signals often dismissed as isolated incidents can be the body's way of communicating the emotional turmoil within. So pay attention.

Another frequently overlooked sign is the subtle withdrawal from social interactions. While it is normal to seek solitude occasionally, a persistent retreat from social engagements and activities once enjoyed may indicate an underlying struggle.

The depressed individual may find solace in isolation, inadvertently deepening the emotional abyss.

The distortion of cognitive processes is another key factor you cannot afford to ignore. Depression can warp one's perception leading to persistent negative thoughts, self-doubt and a sense of worthlessness.

As if that is not enough, physical manifestations often accompany depression such as changes in appetite.

Overeating or a sudden loss of interest in food can be indicative of the emotional battles waged within. Weight fluctuations while seemingly trivial, carry profound implications for mental health.

Recognising these subtle signs is the first step towards fostering mental well-being.

For individuals grappling with depression, seeking professional help is crucial. Mental health professionals offer a safe space for exploring and understanding the intricate layers of emotions.

Friends and family play a pivotal role in supporting someone dealing with depression too. Encouraging open communication devoid of judgment can be a lifeline for those navigating the storm within.

The power of connection, empathy and understanding cannot be overstated in this journey towards healing.
