Former champions Prisons Kenya handed Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) their first league defeat this season as the sixth national men’s volleyball league continued yesterday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

KPA’s good run had seen them remain unbeaten but yesterday was a bad day in the court after they were thrashed 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) by the marauding wardens.

Under the tutelage of David Lung’aho, Prisons entered the match determined and never disappointed.

In the first set, Prisons took a comfortable 11-7 lead with Kevin Maiyo, Timon Kimtai, Rogers Kipkirui and Charles Bosire causing havoc on the Dockers side coached by Sammy Mulinge.

The Prisons side had superb blocks and attacks that worked perfectly for them in all the three sets.

KPA’s outside hitters Peter Kamara and Enock Mogeni played well but the Prisons players seemed well prepared for the match.

However, both teams have secured places in the national play-offs. Prisons beat Equity bank 3-1 while KPA upset General Service Unit (GSU) 3-0 on Friday.

Lung’aho said they had trained well and the strategy was to win all the three matches.

“We beat Western Prisons on Thursday and went ahead to stop Equity Bank on Friday before flooring KPA today,” he said.

Mulinge said he faced a strong side compared to the previous teams they played since Thursday.

“It was a match that could have gone either way but our opponents were well prepared,” Mulinge said.

Meanwhile, all the matches scheduled for today have been postponed to a later date.

At the same time national beach volleyball team continued with their training at the Big Tree Beach Hotel in Mombasa in readiness for next month’s Commonwealth Games.

The team that comprises of Naomi Too, Phosca Kasisi, Olympians pair of Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Agala is under the tutelage of Salome Wanjala.

The team is determined to take their training a notch higher by playing competitive build up matches against national league men leaders KPA.

“Due to time factor, we cannot travel out for international friendlies but we shall play KPA men’s team for strength,” Wanjala said.

Kenya has been pooled in pool A with reigning champions Canada, New Zealand, and Ghana.

Kenya will be making her debut in the games scheduled for Smithfield, in Birmingham city, UK from July 28 to August 8.

The Club Games has attracted 12 teams and Wanjala believes the competition will be tough.

She said Kenya’s performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the participation in the World Championships will be an added advantage to the team.
