Kenya Defence Forces handball player George Mwangi has passed on.

Mwangi died on Monday evening after being hit by a vehicle that lost control along Nyayo National Stadium footpath.

Sergent Mwangi was in the company of another person who is said to have survived.

The 34-year-old died on the spot while the other person is still nursing injuries in a Nairobi hospital.

He was on his way from training in preparation for the start of the Super Cup event and the new season that is due for next month.

Confirming the incident, Kenya Handball Federation fixtures Secretary Charles Omondi said that after the car hit the duo, it went ahead and rammed into the stadium’s fence.

While eulogizing the deceased, Omondi expressed his deepest sympathy to the family, players and friends of Mwangi, saying it was unfortunate the player died after coming from doing what he does best.

“I wish to convey my deepest condolences on my behalf and that of the Kenya Handball Federation to the family and entire handball fraternity to bear the big loss. We are in shock and we accept the will of God,” said Omondi.

He further noted that everybody is still in shock and has to let the team time to absorb the shock. Mwangi, commonly known as ‘Mwas’ played for KDF senior and Youth teams.

His body is preserved at the Forces Memorial Mortuary as funeral plans begin. He leaves behind a wife and two children. ?
