The national women's volleyball team finally left the country yesterday morning to take part in the All Africa Games qualifiers in Kampala.

The team was in danger of missing the qualifiers as they had not received air tickets by Friday afternoon.

But the side failed to receive any funding from the government as top ministry officials were unavailable to approve the money needed for the players' upkeep in Kampala.

And worse, there was no senior official at the Ministry of Sports to help the situation as both Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed and her Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia are away.

Kaberia has been in Japan while Amina travelled to Canada for an anti-doping conference.

KVF vice chairman Charles Nyaberi said the team has travelled without allowances, participation fees and money to pay for their accommodation.

“We finally managed to secure the tickets on Friday evening. But there is no money for the team. The players are obviously demoralised as they would have wanted to have some money before they travel,” he said.

The federation presented a budget of Sh11 million to the ministry on April 4.
