Kenya Volleyball Federation women’s league champions Kenya Pipeline have signed Kenyan international Jane Wacu on a three-year deal from arch-rivals Prisons Kenya.

In what could be a transfer of the decade in volleyball family, the 31-year-old former Club Chamalieres (French side) setter has ditched Prisons, to join her look-a-like and stylish national teammate, Janet Wanja at Pipeline. Wacu rejoins Pipeline after leaving for Prisons in 2006.

As part of the deal, which makes Wacu the highest paid volleyball player in the country with a gross salary of Sh65,000, she will be offered a permanent job by the seven-time African champions.

Wacu, whose signature was confirmed three days after close of the transfer window on Tuesday, is eager to help her new club end their 12 years of near misses in continental club tournament at next month’s (April 6-16) Africa women’s Club Championships in Tunisia.

“I know it is a risky move, but that is life and I am ready for the new challenge. I want to face new challenges in different environment,” Wacu told Feverpitch yesterday.

Although Wacu expects Pipeline to live up to their ‘job’ agreement, she is aware of the transfer implications that could see her miss out of domestic fixtures until next season.

“It is a great offer that has come with a house and medical cover, but I am just hoping they will live up to our agreement and give me a permanent job,” she said.

Pipeline coach Japheth Munala was equally delighted with Wacu’s acquisition as they prepare for the continental showpiece.

“I am more than happy to have Wacu in my team. She is a great player with a lot of experience. The two international setters (Wacu and Wanja) will be invaluable to the team as they will also help nurture upcoming setters for both club and national assignments,” said Munala.

Commenting on the move, KVF National Fixtures Secretary Ismael Chege said:

“As per the records I have, Wacu has been registered as Prisons player for the 2017 season and not KPC.”

But KPC Corporate Communications Manager Jason Nyantino refuted claims that Wacu might be locked out of this season’s league.
