Girls in Kisumu engaging in prostitution for Sh10

This week a shocking report laid bare of how girls in Kisumu are engaging in prostitution for as little as Sh10.

It is alleged most of these girls sell their bodies to earn a living due to the hard economic times.

State agencies should investigate the reasons behind these unfortunate incidents.

Parents of these girls should also be investigated since there have been claims that some guardians encourage their underage daughters to engage in prostitution to earn money for their basic needs, yet a majority of them are underage and of school-going age.

Men who take advantage of the vulnerable minors and dupe them into having sex with them should also be brought to book.

The authorities should arrest such offenders and punished heavily to curb perpetuation of this vice, which has contributed greatly to spread of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV.

The unfortunate events point to a breakdown in the society’s moral fabric.

At family level, parents must play its roles and obligations well to safeguard the future generation which is only possible on the moral values imparted to them during their early life.

This is because children have an immense power of observation and their feelings are deep rooted.

They always observe their parents at home, their teachers in school and the society at large. It is thus important that they are imparted with sound base of strong moral values.

The Government must stop this worrying trend forthwith and find a way to ensure these young girls are either taken to school or empowered to fight poverty in the informal settlements where this vice is rampant.

I am calling upon the Government to intervene and stipulate stiff penalties to these sexual preys and parents found guilty.
