Mathare United suffered their first loss of the season after falling 2-0 to visiting Nairobi City Stars in yesterday’s Premier League match at the Nyayo Stadium.

Ezekiel Odera and Oscar Mbugua scored in either half to hand the Kawangware-based side their first victory of the season.

“Impressive performance and great win for the boys against a strong team. We are now motivated ahead of AFC Leopards match,” a delighted City Stars coach Bobby Ogolla told Feverpitch.

City Stars took a fourth minute lead when Odera volleyed home Jimmy Bageya’s incisive cross from the right.

Two minutes later, Thomas Wanyama saw his free kick parried away for a fruitless corner before Bageya’s attempt missed target by inches.

Bageya had a chance to extend the lead on the hour mark, but George Owino made a brilliant tackle to deny him a scoring opportunity before Stars goalkeeper Victor Omondi pulled off a fine save from Owino’s header.

Harrison Mwendwa had a chance to draw level in the 49th minute but the diminutive winger fluffed his shot in the area.

In the 62nd minute, captain Oscar Mbugua put the game beyond Mathare’s reach with a spectacular strike.
