Wetang'ula snubs meeting with Oparanya and ODM leaders

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula

KENYA: Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula yesterday snubbed a meeting with Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

The governor has warned the Ford Kenya leader against launching his presidential bid in his county.

The senator instead called a press conference at his Bungoma home where his allies vowed that his presidential bid will go on as planned.

As the senator was holding the media brief, Mr Oparanya and ODM leaders drawn from the region were waiting for the senator. They waited for over five hours to no avail.

Speaking to the Press, Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi said CORD had not held its primaries and, therefore, it does not have a presidential candidate at the moment.

Mr Wanyonyi maintained that Oparanya will not stop the Ford Kenya party leader from launching his presidential bid.

PARTY WARS

"Oparanya is a junior member in CORD; just like I am the Ford Kenya chairman in Trans Nzoia County. He has no power to stop his senior, Wetang'ula, from launching his presidential bid. We will be in Kakamega on the material day and everything remains as planned," he said.

Wetang'ula avoided the topic and instead chose to talk about the disputed Migingo Island on Lake Victoria.

Oparanya is on record telling Wetang'ula to shelve his presidential ambitions in favour of CORD leader Raila Odinga.

"The senator was supposed to meet ODM leaders and the Council of Elders in Kakamega County on his presidential bid launch that is expected to take place next month at Muliro Gardens. I am told he has left for an abrupt meeting in Nairobi," Oparanya told the media.

The ODM leaders in consultation with the elders resolved that Oparanya should stop engaging with Wetang'ula for his failure to attend the meeting.

"We do not entertain the divisive politics being introduced by Wetang'ula. The ODM party leader is the presidential candidate. The senator should launch his bid in Nairobi," ODM Kakamega women leader and nominated MCA Jamila Anjere said.
