The Kenya Methodist University (Kemu) School of Medicine has launched a medical centre in the county to serve the community.

The university has partnered with Kiirua Mission Hospital and the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital in holding its first medical camp, where over 2,000 people were screened and treated for various ailments.

According to the Dean of School of Medicine Otsyula Barasa, the opening of the new medical centre that is equipped with state-of-art equipment to screen for cancer and other diseases, was due to the realisation that a large number of residents had no access to treatment.

"The new health facility located in the university's compound will play multiple purposes including providing the rural community with the services they require at very affordable charges and to offer our medical students a chance to practice what they learn," said Prof Barasa.

During the free medical camp at the main campus, residents were screened for cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases. They were also given medicine.
