Safety of passengers should be priority

The matatu crackdown is a welcome move but emphasis should be on the safety of the passengers, the mechanical condition of the vehicles and restoring sanity in the transport industry.

These are the key concerns of every matatu user.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) should focus their energies on impounding unroadworthy public service vehicles which are not registered with any Sacco, and arrest reckless, over speeding and drunk drivers who kill innocent Kenyans along our major highways and seize lorries ferrying bhang and other contraband products.

This way, they would save many lives lost through reckless driving. NTSA must put emphasis on the safety of passengers and ending madness on roads.

NTSA needs to first look into more serious issues that need to be addressed.

The main objective of NTSA is to ensure safety and quality transport operation systems on our roads. Safety entails matatus that are in good condition, well-fitted with speed limit controls, safety belts, Sacco membership and above all issuance PSV licences.

Graffiti is all about art and an income to many people who do the work. The matatus should also ensure they comply with the regulations set out.

That matatus should adhere to all rules set out for the sector is not in dispute.
