The US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec Monday announced that his government would launch new HIV and Aids programmes in the country.

The ambassador said the US is committed to helping Kenya achieve zero deaths from HIV and Aids.

Mr Godec said they have launched HIV programmes in some parts of Western Kenya like Kisumu and Homa Bay, and Nairobi County as well.

"We have launched HIV programmes in places which are hardest hit. We want zero deaths from HIV and Aids. We are trying to reach more people and to get them into appropriate treatment so that they can be aware of their status, treat the disease when they have it and not infect new people," he said.

The envoy was speaking when he visited Korogocho Community Centre in Nairobi ahead of the World Aids Day where he interacted with people below 18 years living with the virus.

"The young people have faced terrible times but thanks to support from the US, they have finally gotten help. Many of them are in school," he said.
