English Premier League (EPL) side Arsenal celebrated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on his birthday on Thursday a day after suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden were on target as Man City thumped 10-man Arsenal at a wet Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Aubameyang‘s future at the Emirates remains very much up in the air, but the Gunners took time to celebrate their talisman.

Kenyans, however, took time on social media to troll the Gabon international after a poor outing in the much-awaited showdown that was postponed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“He was a shadow of himself against Man city playing 90+ minutes without a shot on target good for nothing striker,” one Facebook user wrote.

A second posted: “Does he really deserve the contract extension? I questioned his commitment with his game. £30m will be enough to get him out. Nkt”

A third added: “Eti captain...Arsenal is one confused club. Aubameyang lacks captaincy qualities..can't even command players!”

“Great that you avoided the word striker. Which striker fails to score on such a big day? HBD though,” another wrote.

A fifth posted: “Judging him from that game, it would be better for arsenal to cash in on him. This guy was missing jana..only saw him at halftime...happy birthday Aubameyang.”

Aubameyang has been in scoring form with 17 goals and fighting to win the 2019/20 Golden Boot. Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is currently the Premier League top scorer with 19 goals and 4 assists.

Arsenal, who had won their past three and not lost the previous six in the top flight prior to football's suspension, the damage to their already slim UEFA Champions League qualification hopes may now be irrevocable. The Gunners are eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea with nine games to go.

Arsenal visit Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday as City are back at the Etihad Stadium on Monday when Burnley head to Manchester.

Facts according to Opta Data:

  • Arsenal are winless in their last 26 Premier League away games against fellow 'big six' opposition (D10 L16), with their last such victory coming at the Etihad in January 2015 (2-0).
  • David Luiz has conceded four penalties in the Premier League this season – the joint-most in a single campaign in the competition's history (also Jose Fonte 2016-17, Gary Caldwell 2011-12, Ibrahima Sonko 2007-08, Claus Lundekvam 1999-00, Ken Monkou 1993-94 & Luc Nijholt 1993-94).
  • Arsenal have been shown three red cards in 11 Premier League games under Mikel Arteta – the same total they registered in 51 games under Unai Emery.
