Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST RFC) and Strathmore Leos both booked a home semifinal playoff spot after winning their respective KRU Championship matches over the weekend.

MMUST narrowly defeated relegation-threatened Eldoret RFC 5-0 in a fiercely contested clash at Moi University to consolidate their second-place spot with 58 points, eight points behind leaders Strathmore Leos.

Leos extended their unbeaten run to 14 games after thrashing hosts Catholic Monks 33-15 to remain top of the standing with 66 points.

Former Kenya Cup side Mean Machine lost 18-10 to Northern Suburbs leaving them 14 points behind second-placed MMUST, which knocks them out of the semis slot.

The loss means both MMUST and Leos qualify for the semifinal playoffs with two matches to spare but MMUST coach Ochieng Ahaya has his eyes fixed on finishing the season on a high.

Speaking to Standard Sports, Ahaya said their objective is to win the two remaining matches, beginning with Kisii as they prepares for the semis.

“We have been in a tough journey since the beginning of the season and we can start to see fruits of our labour. However, for us to achieve our dream of qualifying for the Kenya Cup, we have to continue working hard and maintain the tempo. That is why we have to win all the remaining matches ahead of the semis,” he said.

Strathmore captain Gabriel Adero also said they are now working towards their big assignment with their top spot berth already sealed.

“We only need one win and we are confirmed as table toppers for the season but our major focus is to rest and start preparation for the semis,” Adero said.
