Vihiga United close gap on leaders City Stars to three points

Vihiga United utilized their home advantage to defeat Kenya Police 2-0 and close the gap to within three points of Betika Super League leaders Nairobi City Stars.

The win saw the former Kenya Premier League outfit leapfrog Nairobi Stima and Bidco United to second place in the standings with 31 points, three less than leaders City Stars who were held to a barren draw by newbies Muranga Seals on 34 points.

Speaking to the Standard Sports, Vihiga captain Patrick Okulo credited the win to hard work and unmatched home support from their fans.

“The fans were great and we hope to continue winning with our aim being to get back to the premier league next season,” Okulo said.

In Awendo, Clinton Okoth scored a hat-trick on top of Clifford Ouma and Alfred Odiwour’s goals as Migori Youth bounced back to winning ways with a 5-1 thrashing of relegation bound St Joseph Youth.

Okoth’s treble saw him top the league’s top scoring chart with 13 goals from 14 matches with the win steering Robert Ojienda’s charges to fifth in the table with 24 points.

In Kisii, Nairobi Stima were held to a 1-1 draw by hosts Shabana, a result that saw the power men drop to fourth in the standing with 28 points same as Bidco United who command a big goal difference.

Fortune Sacco on the other hand moved to the bottom half table after seeing off relegation threatened Kibera Black Stars 1-0 in Thika.

Mt. Kenya United edged Administration Police 2-0 in Ruaraka to move to eighth as Ushuru played to a 2-2 stalemate against Coast Stima at the same ground.

Vihiga Bullets joined the winning fray with a 2-0 win over fellow novices APS Bomet in Mumias.
