Kabras Sugar RFC utility player Philip Wokorach is the winner of the 2019 Nile Special- Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Fans’ Choice Award.

The Ugandan rugby cranes star was nominated alongside Lilian Ajio (Netball), Joshua Cheptegei (Athletics) and Uganda Cranes star Dennis Onyango scooping 60% of the fans vote to emerge the winner.

Long-distance runner Cheptegei finished runners up as netball star Ajio and Mamelodi Sundowns F.C stopper Onyango tying at third with 4%.

On his previous two attempts, however, Wokorach has lost the main award to Onyango in 2016 and para-athlete David Emong in 2017.

In an interview with the Standard Sports, the Kenya Cup try top scorer said he is humbled and thanked God for everything he has been able to achieve this season.

“I would like to thank my fans from Uganda and Kenya for showing their love in choosing me for his award. God has been my guide in my achievements so far both when with my country and club, Kabras Sugar. My focus is now to continue giving my best,” Wokorach said.

The Kabras Sugar player has been instrumental for the millers in the 2018-19 season and is the Kenya Cup try top scorer with 23 tries after 15 matches.

His good form has helped Kabras stay at the helm of the standings with 69 points, one point ahead of their long term rivals KCB.

Kabras head coach Henley Du Plessis congratulated the players saying that the award shows that fans are happy with the impact he inputs when playing for his national team and club.

“Philip has been fantastic since the start of the season and am not surprised that he won the award. He is the Kenya Cup try top scorer with over twenty tries, that shows how good he is,” said Du Plessis.

The 2016 champions will, however, play without their top scorer when they face Impala on Saturday as curtains fall in the 2018-19 Kenya Cup regular season in Nairobi.

Victory for the sugar men will mean Kabras will be hosting the 2018-19 Kenya Cup finals for the first time at the Kakamega Sportsground in Kakamega.

Wokorach is away representing Uganda at the Hong Kong 7s Qualifier on the HSBC World Rugby Series.
