Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he wasn’t shocked by the defeat to perennial French Champions Paris St. Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Man United saw their hopes of progressing to the last eight of Europe’s elite club competition diminish after going down 2-0 at Old Trafford courtesy of goals from French duo Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe.

Following the loss, Solskjaer defended the way his team played and admitted they were a class below PSG.

“Reality check? Maybe you can say that because that’s the level we want to get to. We’ve been talking about top four, it’s one thing but we want to be at the top and Man United should be at the top.

This is a top, top team we played against. Our players today, disappointed, of course, but I also think they know we need to step up our level to get to the level we want to get to,” said Solskjaer.

Man United’s woes were worsened in the penultimate stages of the game after Paul Pogba was shown a second yellow for a nasty challenge on Dani Alves.

Antony Martial and Jesse Lingard also went off injured in the dying minutes of the first half and were replaced by Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez respectively.

Solskjaer told the press they’d have to wait a few days to know the extent of the injuries but confirmed they were groin and muscle problems.

“Jesse and Anthony give us something, let's hope they are not too serious. They are muscle injuries so we will have to wait a couple of days,” explained Solskjaer.

The interim boss also urged his players not to feel sorry for themselves since fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool lie ahead.

“You have to learn from that. You can’t feel sorry for yourself. Look forward. We’ve got Chelsea and Liverpool the next two games, so whoever feels sorry for themselves probably won’t play against Chelsea,” he said.

Man United now have to score three without conceding against PSG at the Le Parc De Princes in a fortnight or risk being eliminated at this stage of the competition for a second successive season.
