Jose Mourinho - Manchester United's transfer plans

Jose Mourinho is keen to make up for a poor summer transfer window in which he signed just three players - one for the first team.

The Manchester United boss has struggled at points this season and still requires some new faces - particularly at centre-back - if he is to contest the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Mourinho's Red Devils were linked with a number of top defenders during the summer, everyone from Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld to Diego Godin and Jerome Boateng, but were unable to get a deal over the line.

It seems the club were continually priced out of deals, but according to reports, Mourinho may have a little bit more cash to work with in January.

This week Belgium beat Iceland in the Nations League, and Mourinho was in the crowd to watch the action in Brussels.

Neither Red Devils duo Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini were in the team to play Iceland, and The Evening Standard are reporting that Mourinho was in the crowd to keep track of Alderweireld.

When United made an approach for the Tottenham star this summer they were quoted a figure of around £60million, which Ed Woodward found excessive.

But the Belgian's contract is running down at Spurs, and there is the suggestion that United could land the centre-back for around a 1/3 of this in January.

Mourinho is a big fan of the Tottenham defender, who has been a stand-out player for Mauricio Pochettino for some time now, but appears ready to move on.
