Marouane Fellaini has decided to part ways with his afro by getting a fresh new trim ahead of his 31st birthday.

The Manchester United midfielder has sported the bushy hairstyle since playing for Standard Liege.

And when he joined Everton in 2008 many fans started wearing Fellaini wigs to Goodison Park in support of their new favourite midfielder.

The Belgium star's hair has rarely changed over the years, with the most bold move he has made being to dye it blonde.

However, the Red Devils star, who is not in the Belgium squad, has gone for a short haircut all over.

The midfielder posted three pictures of his new barnet to Instagram. He captioned his entry with: "New year, new look #birthdaytomorrow."

However, Fellaini's trim did not go down well with his team-mates.

In fact, countryman Vincent Kompany was convinced it was an edited he photo. The Manchester City defender commented: "It's photoshopped, it can't be true!!"

Fellaini received a mixed reaction from fans.

Several supporters replied to his post with: "Nooooooooooo."

While another fan posted: "Looks more like a warrior!! Looks like a United warrior."

Fellaini signed a contract with United while at the World Cup with Belgium, extending his current deal until 2020 with the option of a further year.

At the time he said: "I am pleased to be continuing my journey as a Manchester United player. I made this decision because I am very happy here.

"Also, I feel like this team, under Jose, still has a lot we want to achieve. I would like to say a special thank you to Jose for the faith he has always shown in me.

"My focus now is on the World Cup and I am looking forward to a successful season ahead."
