Former parliamentary aspirant wins Sh208 million Sportpesa jackpot

40-year-old Cosmas Korir is the latest millionaire in town after correctly predicting 17 games in the Sportpesa Mega Jackpot to win Sh208, 733,619.

The sleepy village of Cheptabach in Konoin sub-county where Korir hails from came to live as the news of his win started filtering in.

When the Standard visited the village Monday morning, elated neighbors could not hide their joy saying they were proud of Korir’s achievement.

“We are happy for him and proud that Korir has won. We really congratulate him and wish him well,” said Kiprono Tonui a next door neighbor.

Normal business were brought to a standstill at the village with neighbors discussing in groups about the win by Korir.

“We are hesitant to go to the farm since Korir may return from his place of work without our notice. We want to catch a glimpse of the new millionaire in case he will come back today,” said another neighbor.

Neighbors and relatives said they will organize a big party to congratulate him when he return from his place of work.

Korir is a former parliamentary aspirant in Konoin constituency, Bomet County.

The first born son in a family of five vied the seat on a Chama Cha Mashinani ticket where he came second after being beaten by Brighton Yegon who vied on a Jubilee ticket.

Korir who currently works as a director Agriculture department West Pokot County said he placed the bet using Sh100.

In a telephone interview with the Standard, Korir said he did not know he would score big saying his previous prediction have not gone past ten games.

“I have predicted the same before but I hardly won ten games. But I have never lost hope of gamble and the win has paid off for my persistence,” he added.

He said he received the news of his win with joy saying he was elated to talk to Sportpesa CEO one on one when he communicated his win.

“The Sportpesa CEO called me and told me I was the winner and I felt like it was a joke,” he said.

He added: “In fact it I am still in doubt that I actually won the amount.”

Korir however said he was yet to make his mind on what to do with the money.

“Of course I will give 10 per cent of the money to God. As a Christian I have no option and as an appreciation for the favour,” added Korir.
