Paul Pogba was informed he had been stripped of his vice-captaincy duties by Jose Mourinho shortly after he questioned the Manchester United manager's tactics.

The Frenchman told the press he believes the Red Devils should "attack, attack, attack," following their 1-1 draw with Wolves, suggesting the players had been instructed to be cautious with the ball.

The World Cup winner played no part in Manchester United's Carabao Cup defeat by Derby on Tuesday, as the Red Devils were knocked out the competition on penalties by their Championship opposition.

Pogba watched the action from the stands at Old Trafford, but was a hot topic of discussion in Mourinho's post-match interview on Sky Sports.

The Red Devils boss said: "The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore. But no fall-out. No problems at all.

"The same person that decides Paul is not second captain anymore was exactly the same person that decides that Paul was the second captain, myself.

"I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I don't have to explain."

Mourinho informed Pogba he would no longer be Manchester United's vice-captain in front of his team-mates in the changing room.

According to a source who spoke to The Times: "Jose Mourinho told the players that Paul Pogba will not be the captain because he doesn't represent what a captain is and Manchester United is bigger than anyone."

The report added: "The players were happy with that decision and the reasons behind the manager's decision."

The Sun is now reporting that in a recent conversation between the duo, Mourinho allegedly told Pogba: "You're a good player, not a special player."

Mourinho and Pogba have been engaged in a stand-off for some time now after the Red Devils boss hooked the Frenchman in a defeat by Tottenham in January.

Since then things have arguably deteriorated, and Barcelona are continuing to keep tabs on the midfielder, who they hope to sign in the new year.
