Jose Mourinho confirmed he has removed Paul Pogba from Manchester United's vice-captaincy duty.

The Red Devils boss announced the news following his side's Carabao Cup third round defeat to Derby.

The France midfielder was rested for the clash and watched on from the stands. Some reports suggested the pair had another falling out as the Portuguese broke the news to Pogba in front of his team-mates at Carrington on Tuesday.

But Mourinho rebuffed claims of an argument.

When asked if there was a fallout between himself and Pogba, Mourinho told Sky Sports: "The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore.

"But no fall-out. No problems at all. The same person that decides Paul is not second captain anymore was exactly the same person that decides that Paul was the second captain, myself.

"I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall-out at all, no problems at all, just one decision that I don't have to explain."

The Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup third round to Championship side Derby after losing on penalties.

After taking the lead through Juan Mata, a terrific Harry Wilson free-kick and a Jack Marriott goal turned the game on its head.

Between the visitors' two goals Sergio Romero was sent off for handball.

Marouane Fellaini did score a late equaliser to send the game to penalties but Phil Jones missed the decisive spot kick to send Derby through.
