Police investigating death threats issued to Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius

Merseyside Police are investigating death threats which were made to Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius following the Champions League final.

Karius was at fault for two of the three goals that Liverpool conceded as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Spanish giants Real Madrid on Saturday night.

The German stopper was left inconsolable at the full-time whistle, apologising to fans in the stadium and also in press conferences following the game.

But his errors were met with a raft of abuse on social media.

Vile messages included, "I’ll murder your girl I’ll murder your girl".

Another claimed that his “sons deserve to die of cancer”, while another punter wrote: “I hope your whole family dies”.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the Telegraph: “The force takes social media posts of this nature extremely seriously and any offences identified will be investigated.

“Merseyside Police would like to remind social media users than any offences including malicious communications and threatening behaviour will be investigated.”

Karius publicly apologised for his errors in an interview following the end of the match.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "I don't feel anything right now. Today I lost my team the game and I feel sorry for everyone.

"I'm sorry for everyone - from the team, from the whole club - that the mistakes cost dearly.

Speaking about Gareth Bale's second goal which went through his hands, Karius said: "It moved around a lot.

"I tried to catch it, maybe I should have done it safer and just put it out of play instead of trying to catch it.

A tearful Karius went over to the Liverpool fans in Kiev straight after the match to offer his apologies.

In comments on BT Sport after the game, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard said: "No-one makes a mistake on purpose.

"Fair play to [Karius] for going to the fans. I admire him for owning up and apologising."
