The inaugural Mutuini Half Marathon, an initiative of Mutuini Hope Centre, a day care and education centre for needy children is slated for April 29 in Dagoretti South Constituency.

Besides the Half Marathon, there will be a 10km road race and the special category race of three and half kilometres that will see participants compete for a course by raising funds for the centre.

Athletics Kenya (AK) has sanctioned the event and is offering technical support such as route mapping and officiating under Dagoretti Sub-County AK chairman and AK trainer John Mwithiga, popularly known as ‘Warm-Up’.

Registration of participants is scheduled for April 3 in various registration centres to be announced in next week.

So far, the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi, Aquamist Ltd and the Nairobi Hospital have come on board to support the event.

The race organisers have called for more corporate bodies and individuals to support the marathon.

Mbugua Mwangi, the founder of the centre said: “I am looking forward to the day when every child is born in this country and will have access to proper nutrition, healthcare and education, whether their parents are there or not, whether they are able on not.”

He added: “We need to get back to the point where every child is everyone’s child.

“That is why we opened the centre to give these children a fair chance in life and we are calling on all people of good will to feel obliged to support the marathon.” [Dennis Okeyo]
