Schools: St Mary's and Koyonzo shine on day one of Yala Open Tournament

St Mary's Yala and Koyonzo Secondary showcased their dominance on the opening day of the Yala Open tournament, setting the stage for an exciting build-up to the 2025 KSSSA Term One Games.

The tournament, a key preparation ground for schools, witnessed thrilling action across various disciplines, with Yala impressing in football and Koyonzo ruling the rugby field.

In football, Yala's teams delivered standout performances, particularly in Pool C. Yala crushed Nyamninia 5-0 in one match, while their Pool A team managed a solid 4-0 win over Nyamninia and a 1-0 victory against Mwihila. Meanwhile, Karabok stunned Green Stars 4-2 in a Pool D match, with other teams such as Katolo securing vital wins to advance their chances.

In rugby 15s, Koyonzo Secondary made their intentions clear, routing Ekambuli 66-0 before dismantling St Anthony's B 53-0 in their second match. The former national champions demonstrated their attacking flair and defensive discipline, making them the team to beat.

St Mary's Yala also impressed, edging out Chavakali 14-12 in a hard-fought opener. Chavakali bounced back to crush Chianda 30-0, while Vihiga cruised to a 38-0 victory over St Mary's Yala B.

In basketball 5x5, St Mary's Yala (Black Saints) maintained their supremacy, defeating Chavakali 50-9 and outlasting YBA Club 48-40 in a tightly contested game. Their consistent performances highlighted their strength on both ends of the court.

Handball action saw Yala deliver commanding victories, defeating Mwihila Boys 26-6 and Vihiga Boys 22-10. The team's cohesion and tactical awareness stood out, making them favorites in the discipline.

In hockey, Yala showcased their skill, battling to a 1-1 draw with Maseno before blanking Sirembe 3-0. Other results included Bondo's 1-0 win over Usenge and Maseno University's dominant 3-0 victory over Sirembe.

As the tournament progresses, St Mary's Yala and Koyonzo Secondary look poised to continue their dominance, with teams from other schools determined to challenge their supremacy. Day two promises even more intense competition as schools gear up for the upcoming KSSSA season.
