Mudasa, Makini top Kisumu Junior Chess Championships

Mudasa Academy and Makini School dominated the 2023 Kisumu Junior Chess Championship after finishing first and second respectively.

Breetaliza Amanda and Reuben Curtis led for Mudasa in the Under-9 girls and Under-11 boys categories respectively as Skylar Amor (Under-11 girls) and Victor Tindi (Under-15) also went home with gold medals.

It was a clean sweep for Mudasa as they took the top three position in the Under-9 girls category. Amanda finished top with 6 wins and a tie break of 19.5 points followed by Krystal Meyor with six wins and 19 points. Vivica Kim had six wins.

In the Under-9 boys show, Jayden Javan from Makini topped followed by Fednard Ochieng of Mudasa and Matis Ogola from The Msingi School.

Kyle Aswa from Sapphire School and Faustin Fayola from Golden Elites topped in the Under 9 boys and girls categories respectively.

Reuben Curtis of Mudasa led Joseph Nerry (Makini) and Jayden Herman (Golden Elites) in the Under-11 boys while Skylar Amor also of Mudasa made it a 1-2 finish alongside her schoolmate Sonia Victorious while Anoushka Maria from Jalaram Acdemy came third.

Serena Stacy of Golden Elites shined in the Under-13 girls show as Marvin Ousia from Makini topped the boys category.

Zena Ibrahim from Sinyolo Girls went home happy after finishing top in the Under-15 girls, finishing ahead of Mitchel Atieno from Koru Girls and Mary Agnes Owango from Makini School. Victor Tindi won the boys show.

Shukri Shakira from Agha Khan Primary took home gold in the Under-17 category as Rishit Ravat of Kisumu Senior won the boys category.

Tournament Director Andrew Owili thanked the parents, students and stakeholders who attended the event and said it is their support that has taken chess this far.

Owili who also doubles as the lead trainer of Makini School that emerged as number two best primary said he was happy with his students who had shown so much grit and hard work.

National chess Instructor, Isaac Ondeng also commended the Mudasa Academy for being the best primary school in the region.He said the kids learning curve has always been steepening through continuous dedication to training and learning.

Koru Girls High School was the best secondary school.
